Phonetics atau disebut juga fonetik ialah ilmu yang mempelajari tentang suara yang dihasilkan dengan bantuan dari beberapa bagian tubuh seperti; bibir,gigi,faring,dan paru-paru. suara yang dihasilkan tidak dilihat apakah itu memiliki suatu makna ataupun tidak.

Tiga bagian penting phonetics:

1. Articulatory phonetics: Bagaimana cara kerja alat-alat organ tubuh manusia dalam menghasilkan suara.

2. Acoustics phonetics   : Mempelajari bunyi bahasa dari segi bunyi sebagai gejala fisis. Dalam fonetik ini yang dipelajari adalah gelombang suara dan bagaimana mereka didengarkan oleh telinga manusia.

3. auditory phonetics     :  Bagaimana cara kerja telinga menerima bunyi bahasa sebagai getaran udara. Dalam fonetik ini yang dipelajari adalah proses resepsi bunyi dan terutama bagaimana otak mengolah data yang masuk sebagai suara.

Applications of phonetics include:

• Forensic Phonetics : the use of phonetics (the science of speech) for forensic (legal) purposes.
• Speech Recognition : the analysis and transcription of recorded speech by a computer system.
• Speech Synthesis : the production of human speech by a computer system.
• Pronunciation : to learn actual pronunciation of words of various languages.
